I got a little bit worried a while ago because I went to visit Wil Wheaton’s podcast page Radio Free Burrito and it was gone. Gone! I admit, I may have shed a few tears.

After all, listening to Radio Free Burrito is what got me interested in podcasting and basically gave me a hall pass to go and do likewise. And it was just gone! But it’s back now:

Whew! It’s back! That probably means something like Wil forgot to renew the domain or forgot to pay for hosting or something like that. I have done that myself, many, many times.

The good news is that it’s back; the bad news is that there has been nothing new there for a while:

Which makes me sad, because I truly loved listening to this podcast and would eagerly listen to new episodes, but making a podcast is a lot of work. I have found there to be anywhere from a 10:1 to a 30:1 ratio between the time spent behind the scenes doing research, recording, and editing, and the actual length of the podcast. That means that a mere 30 minute podcast could take anywhere from 300 minutes (i.e., five hours) to 900 minutes (i.e., 15 hours) to get out the door. And that’s on a good day.

So yeah, the fact that there is nothing new there and has been nothing new there is actually good news, because it means that our old pal Wil Wheaton is probably getting actual acting and voiceover work (the kind that pays the bills, that is), which is a good thing. Unfortunately, I don’t really consume a lot of new media these days, and so I’m not really aware of it, but that’s okay. In a world in which everything comes at us really fast from all directions all the time, stepping back from that and enjoying some old fashioned physical media (i.e., books, movies and tv shows on DVDs—a topic I will touch on at some point) is probably a fairly healthy thing to do.

It also means that I need to get off my duff and work on my own podcast (The Silent Noise Project, and I still thank my former student Jake W. for coming up with that name when he was in ninth grade all those years ago). I released #12 way back in 2023, and was working on episode #13 and then it just fell off my radar. Time to get it back on my radar.
