I bought a pair of slippers.

That’s right: slippers. But know the history: I’ve always been a barefoot kind of guy. One of my main joys in life is going barefoot. When I get home, I take off my shoes. If it’s warm enough, I take off my socks. I just hate having anything on my feet. I don’t understand people who don’t take their shoes off when they get home.

And I really love it when it’s warm enough that I can go around barefoot outside. Ever since I was a baby, I hated to have anything covering my feet. Every November, my mother would ask me if I wanted slippers for Christmas, and I would say no. She finally gave up a few years ago.

So when I called her up and told her that I had invested in a pair of slippers, she just laughed her head off.

Seriously, though, it’s gotten really cold here in the last few days and I haven’t adjusted well, I suppose. I’d been keeping my socks on, but when I go from the living room (where the computer is) to the kitchen or the bathroom, I have to walk past the front door, which is the only place that doesn’t have carpeting. (I’m no fan of carpeting, but it’s not as cold as tile.) And I got tired of walking over that while I’m writing this final paper whenever I need food, drink, or a wee.

So I just went down to the Dollar General and bought a six dollar pair of slippers. The minute I get home, off come the shoes and on go the slippers. And you know what? I’m happy about it. That’s right—I’m just all sorts of cozy because my feet aren’t freezing.

I’m not a total convert yet, though. I can’t wait for spring to get here so I can abandon them. (I have a feeling it’s going to be a long winter, however.) Who knows? I might even get to like them. But I sure hope not.
