Project Wideawake #009

Welcome to episode #9 of Project Wideawake. This is the lost episode. On the plus side, we have new and improved production values, because I’m learning how to use Audacity. (Although there are still places you can hear me move my papers around, I’m getting better about not touching the microphone.) This episode’s music: “Merlin …read more…

Make your own handwriting font

The most wonderful things come to me from Twitter, such as this: If you like your handwriting, here's how to turn it into a font http://t.co/4vvy3sUt7Y pic.twitter.com/il4UmaBfCf — frogsign (@frogsign) March 21, 2015 That link (eventually) takes you to www.myscriptfont.com, where you can make a font based on your own handwriting. Best of all, it’s …read more…

Banana for Scale

I follow a certain person on Twitter. He’s an actor, and while he’s not a big name to everybody (he still does auditions, for crying out loud), he’s a big deal in certain circles. I follow him on Twitter, I read his blog, I listen to his podcasts. It’s not that I admire his acting …read more…

feel the noize…

I did not watch the Super Bowl, because I did not have a dog in that fight. Also, I was snowed in thanks to superstorm Linus, and it is depressing to sit home and drink beer and eat nachos and watch the Super Bowl by yourself. Instead, I watched a documentary about Quiet Riot. And …read more…

A Different Sort of Real Person

“…He’s not a real person.” “You’re only saying that to make me feel better.” “Ok, he’s a real person. But he’s a different sort of real person.” “In what way?” “I don’t know. He just is. He’s like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe and Jimi Hendrix and all those people. You know that he’s going …read more…

Yahoo, this is why you suck…

…and why the rest of you should avoid using Yahoo. For some time, I’ve been debating whether I want to host my own image gallery or not, mainly because I can’t afford to spend more money on memory for my VPS, especially where there are plenty of free online photo sharing platforms. Since Flickr is …read more…

Moving Out

When I first started a personal blog, I had no idea what to do with it. I thought I would post a few recipes, write about my weekend at the beach, and that would be about it. Instead, this blog became a tremendous learning experience for me. I started podcasting (thanks to Wil Wheaton and …read more…

Today is Tuesday, August 12, 2014

I’m a busy person, which is one of the reasons I don’t watch a lot of television. Production values are at an all-time high, because technology has increased in quality at the same rate it has decreased in price (thank you, NASA), but from a content standpoint, most of it is utterly worthless. I don’t …read more…

Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

I had been researching for over a year how to make your own laundry detergent, I just haven’t the time or the energy to do it. While there are several recipes available online, I condensed them all into what I believe is the simplest one. So, as part of the “get excited and make stuff” …read more…

Pickled Jalapeños

One thing I’ve noticed is that pickled jalapeños from the grocery store are inconsistent. Some are hot, some aren’t, and none of them are fresh. I like to make my own. It’s easier than you think. Ingredients 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup water 2 Tbs sugar 1 tsp salt 2-3 garlic cloves, sliced …read more…

Kind of thought my beard trimmer looked like Cthulhu

Peeked out of the shower and saw this. The comb looked a bit more tentacly in the steam and without glasses. Maybe this is more like it?
